Competitors push themselves through the water by swimming, often conducted in open water, with the person paddling and surfing unbroken swells to traverse between islands or go from one coastal location to the other.

The stunning environment you frequently see on a paddleboarding journey, along with the workout you will be performing unconsciously floating down the river or on the beach, may do wonders for your mental health.

You may have observed that paddleboarding has grown increasingly popular in the last 5 years or so, although it is claimed that paddleboarding has been around for thousands of years. Thousands, indeed! From Africa to South America, ancient societies used boards, canoes, and other boats propelled by a long stick to fish, travel, fight, and ride waves.

Paddleboarding was making a return in 1996. Once the realm of only committed watermen and large wave riders in the 1950s and 1960s, the sport found a new group of acolytes on Oahu’s North Shore and in Honolulu at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Dawson Jones was Hawaii’s best paddler at the time.

Jones returned to Hawaii invigorated after finishing the 32-mile (51-kilometer) Catalina Classic from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach. The Paddleboard World Championships were established in 1997. Today, the event is sold out, with prone and stand-up paddleboarders (SUP) from all over the world competing in individual and team divisions.

Paddleboarding may also be done on different types of equipment, such as surfboards. Paddleboards are often constructed of fiberglass, epoxy, and/or carbon fiber. A new paddleboard technology uses epoxy surfboard, which is tougher and lighter than standard fiberglass.

Because of its moderate intensity, paddleboarding is acceptable for people of all ages and levels of expertise, making it ideal for everyone in the family to try out during a day at the beach.

Unless you live near a body of water, paddleboarding will force you to drive to a river, lake, canal, or sea, which means you’ll have no option but to get out there. Furthermore, as you get experience in paddleboarding, you will naturally want to paddle around various regions and explore new routes. Chances are, this will take you further out, and you’ll find yourself experiencing the outdoors outside of your home’s radius, seeing locations you may not have explored without paddle boarding. You may not only paddle on the water, but you can also practice yoga on your paddleboard by utilizing it as a floating yoga mat.
